Trinity Express

East Africa Cross-Border Routes

1. Kigali to Nairobi

The Kigali to Nairobi route is one of Trinity Express's flagship cross-border services, covering approximately 1,450 kilometres across three countries. The journey typically takes between 20 and 24 hours depending on traffic and border processing times. Passengers travel through Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya, passing through some of East Africa's most scenic landscapes including rolling hills, savannah plains, and the shores of Lake Victoria.

The route departs from Kigali and heads east to the Gatuna/Katuna border crossing between Rwanda and Uganda. From there, the bus continues through Uganda, passing through Kabale, Mbarara, and Masaka before reaching Kampala. After a brief stop in Kampala, the journey continues eastward to the Malaba or Busia border crossing into Kenya, then proceeds through Eldoret and Nakuru before arriving in Nairobi.

Passengers should carry valid passports and any required visas for Uganda and Kenya. The East Africa Tourist Visa is accepted at both border crossings and simplifies the documentation process. Trinity Express buses are equipped with comfortable seating and onboard amenities to make the long journey as pleasant as possible, with scheduled rest stops for meals and refreshments along the way.

2. Kigali to Kampala

The Kigali to Kampala route spans roughly 510 kilometres and is one of the busiest cross-border corridors in the Great Lakes region. The journey takes approximately 8 to 10 hours, making it a comfortable same-day trip. This route is popular with business travellers, students, and families moving between Rwanda and Uganda.

Departing from Kigali, the bus travels north through Byumba and the Rwandan countryside before reaching the Gatuna/Katuna border post. After clearing immigration and customs at the border, the route continues through southwestern Uganda, passing through Kabale — a town nestled among the Kigezi highlands — then onward through Ntungamo, Mbarara, and Masaka before arriving in Kampala. The road winds through terraced hillsides and lush green valleys, offering travellers stunning views throughout.

Border processing at Gatuna/Katuna is generally straightforward for nationals of East African Community member states, who can cross with a national ID card. International travellers should have their passport and visa documents ready. Trinity Express staff assist passengers through the border process, and the bus waits for all passengers to clear before continuing the journey.

3. Kigali to Juba

The Kigali to Juba route connects Rwanda's capital with South Sudan's capital, covering approximately 1,300 kilometres. This journey typically takes between 24 and 30 hours depending on road conditions and border formalities. It is one of the longest routes in the Trinity Express network and serves an important link between Central-East Africa and the Greater Horn region.

The bus departs Kigali heading north through Rwanda to the Gatuna/Katuna border, then travels through Uganda via Kabale, Mbarara, and Kampala. From Kampala, the route heads north through Karuma, Gulu, and Nimule — the Ugandan border town — before crossing into South Sudan at the Elegu/Nimule border post. The final stretch passes through Juba's outskirts before arriving in the city centre. Road conditions in South Sudan can vary seasonally, particularly during the rainy season.

Travellers on this route must carry a valid passport and a South Sudan visa, which should be obtained in advance as visas on arrival are not always guaranteed. Ugandan transit arrangements also apply. Passengers are advised to carry sufficient drinking water and snacks for the journey. Trinity Express ensures regular comfort stops and maintains communication with border authorities to facilitate smooth crossings.

4. Kampala to Nairobi

The Kampala to Nairobi route is one of East Africa's most-travelled intercity corridors, stretching approximately 660 kilometres between Uganda's and Kenya's capital cities. The journey takes roughly 10 to 12 hours by road. This route is a vital commercial and passenger link, connecting two of the region's largest economic hubs.

The bus departs Kampala heading east along the Jinja Highway, passing through Jinja — the source of the Nile — and continuing through Tororo and Busia or Malaba, where the Uganda-Kenya border crossing takes place. On the Kenyan side, the route passes through Webuye and Eldoret in the western highlands, then through the agricultural town of Nakuru in the Great Rift Valley, before descending into Nairobi. The terrain transitions from the green shores of Lake Victoria to the dramatic escarpments of the Rift Valley.

Both Ugandan and Kenyan nationals can cross the border with national ID cards under the East African Community free movement protocols. Other nationalities should ensure they have valid passports and appropriate visas. The Malaba and Busia border posts operate around the clock, but processing can be slower during peak travel periods. Trinity Express schedules departures to optimise arrival times and minimise border wait times.

5. Musanze to Kampala

The Musanze to Kampala route covers approximately 480 kilometres, connecting Rwanda's northern tourism hub with Uganda's capital. The journey takes around 8 to 9 hours. Musanze — formerly known as Ruhengeri — is the gateway to Volcanoes National Park and the famous mountain gorillas, making this route popular with tourists as well as local travellers.

Departing Musanze, the bus heads north through the foothills of the Virunga Mountains, passing through Cyanika border post on the Rwanda-Uganda border. From there, the route continues through Kisoro and Kabale in Uganda's southwestern highlands before joining the main highway through Ntungamo, Mbarara, and Masaka to Kampala. The early part of the journey offers breathtaking views of the volcanic peaks and terraced farmlands of the Virunga region.

The Cyanika border crossing is smaller and typically less congested than Gatuna/Katuna, which can mean faster processing times. Travellers should nonetheless have all required travel documents ready. This route is an excellent option for visitors combining gorilla trekking in Rwanda with other Ugandan destinations such as Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Queen Elizabeth National Park.

6. Rubavu to Kampala

The Rubavu to Kampala route links the lakeside city of Rubavu (Gisenyi) on the shores of Lake Kivu with Kampala, covering approximately 540 kilometres. The journey takes around 9 to 11 hours. Rubavu sits on Rwanda's western border with the Democratic Republic of Congo and is a popular departure point for travellers in the Lake Kivu region.

The bus departs Rubavu and travels north along the shores of Lake Kivu before heading inland through northwestern Rwanda. The route crosses into Uganda at the Cyanika border post, then continues through Kisoro, Kabale, and the main southwestern Uganda highway to Kampala. Alternatively, some services may route through Musanze and the Gatuna border, depending on the schedule. The Lake Kivu shoreline portion of the drive is one of the most scenic stretches in the entire Trinity Express network.

Passengers departing from Rubavu should arrive at the bus station with adequate time before departure, as this route can fill up quickly during peak travel periods. All standard cross-border documentation requirements apply at whichever border post the service uses. Travellers coming from Goma in the DRC can easily cross into Rubavu at the Grande Barrière border and connect with this service.

7. Goma to Kampala

The Goma to Kampala route provides a vital transport connection between the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda's capital, covering approximately 570 kilometres. The total journey time is typically 10 to 13 hours, including the border crossing from DRC into Rwanda at the Grande Barrière/Petite Barrière crossing in Gisenyi (Rubavu), and the subsequent Rwanda-Uganda border crossing.

Passengers board in Goma and cross into Rubavu, Rwanda, where the bus continues northward through Rwanda toward the Uganda border. The route then follows the same path as the Rubavu to Kampala service, passing through Uganda's southwestern highlands and onward to Kampala. This dual-border crossing route requires careful documentation, and Trinity Express staff are experienced in guiding passengers through both immigration processes.

Travellers on this route must carry a valid passport with appropriate visas for Rwanda and Uganda. DRC nationals should verify visa requirements for both transit and destination countries before travel. The DRC-Rwanda border crossing can experience variable wait times, so passengers are advised to arrive early. Despite the complexity of two border crossings, Trinity Express maintains a reliable schedule and assists passengers at every step of the journey.

8. Route Network Overview

Trinity Express operates an extensive cross-border route network connecting major cities and towns across East and Central Africa. Our network spans four countries — Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, and South Sudan — with Kigali and Kampala serving as the primary hub cities. From these hubs, passengers can connect to destinations across the region, whether for business, tourism, family visits, or education.

The network is designed to serve both point-to-point travellers and those making multi-leg journeys across the region. For example, a passenger starting in Goma can travel through Rubavu and connect onward to Nairobi, or a traveller from Juba can reach Kigali with a connection in Kampala. Trinity Express coordinates schedules across routes to make connections as seamless as possible, with staff in hub cities available to assist connecting passengers.

We continuously evaluate demand and road infrastructure to expand and improve our route offerings. Our fleet consists of modern, well-maintained coaches equipped for long-distance comfort, including reclining seats, ample luggage space, and onboard entertainment on select services. Whether you are crossing one border or three, Trinity Express is committed to making your journey safe, comfortable, and reliable.

9. Travel Tips for Cross-Border Routes

Preparing for a cross-border bus journey in East Africa requires some advance planning to ensure a smooth experience. First and foremost, confirm your travel documents well before your departure date. Ensure your passport has at least six months of validity remaining, and verify the visa requirements for every country on your route. Nationals of East African Community member states enjoy simplified border crossing procedures, but it is still important to carry valid identification at all times.

Pack wisely for the journey. Bring sufficient drinking water, light snacks, and any medications you may need, especially for longer routes. A light jacket or sweater is recommended as temperatures can drop during evening hours and in highland areas. Keep your important documents, phone, and valuables in a small bag that stays with you on the bus rather than in the luggage compartment. A portable phone charger is also highly recommended, as some routes have limited charging facilities.

Arrive at the departure point at least 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time to check in and stow your luggage. During border crossings, follow the instructions of Trinity Express staff and border officials carefully. Have your documents accessible and ready for inspection. Currency exchange services are usually available near major border posts, so you can obtain local currency for your destination country. Finally, keep Trinity Express's contact numbers saved on your phone in case you need assistance during your journey.

10. Border Crossing Information

Required Documents

All cross-border passengers must carry a valid travel document. For nationals of Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Burundi, South Sudan, and other East African Community member states, a national identity card is generally sufficient for travel within the EAC region. However, carrying a valid passport is strongly recommended, as it is universally accepted and may speed up the immigration process. Non-EAC nationals must present a valid passport with appropriate visas for each country on their route.

Border Procedures

At each border crossing, passengers disembark the bus and proceed through immigration and customs on foot. The process involves presenting your travel documents to immigration officers at the exit point of the country you are leaving, then walking or taking a short shuttle to the entry point of the next country, where you present your documents again. Customs officers may inspect luggage, particularly for commercial goods. The entire process typically takes between 30 minutes and 2 hours depending on the border post and time of day.

What to Expect

Border posts can be busy and sometimes chaotic, particularly during peak travel times such as holidays and weekends. Trinity Express staff accompany passengers through the process and are available to help with any questions or issues. Money changers operate near all major border crossings, but be cautious and count your money carefully. Some border posts have basic facilities such as restrooms and small shops, while others are more limited. Yellow fever vaccination certificates may be requested at certain crossings, particularly when entering Uganda and Kenya, so carry your certificate if you have one.

11. Departure Schedules

Trinity Express operates daily departures on all major routes, with multiple departure times available on the busiest corridors such as Kigali–Kampala and Kampala–Nairobi. Departure times are set to optimise travel comfort and arrival times — many long-distance routes depart in the early morning to allow passengers to arrive at their destination by evening, while some overnight services are also available on select routes.

Schedules may vary slightly depending on the day of the week and the season. During peak travel periods — including holidays, school breaks, and festive seasons — additional services may be added to meet demand. It is always advisable to book your ticket in advance, especially during busy periods, to secure your preferred departure time and seat. Walk-up tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis when seats remain.

For the most current departure times, fares, and seat availability, passengers can check the Trinity Express website, call our booking offices in Kigali, Kampala, or Nairobi, or visit any of our booking counters in person. Our customer service team is available to help you plan your journey and can advise on the best departure times for your specific route and travel needs.
